In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Wood element governs the Liver and Gallbladder—organs that help us move forward in life with purpose, clarity, and resilience. When that energy becomes constrained or stagnant, we may feel irritable, anxious, indecisive, or creatively blocked. These three essential oils are among my favorite allies for restoring balance and flow to Wood energy through both their aroma and biochemical makeup.

Aroma Energy: Sweet, lemony, light yet grounding
Meridian Focus: Liver, Spleen
TCM Actions: Spreads Liver Qi, relaxes emotional constraint, harmonizes Shen, reduces stagnation, supports the middle warmer (digestive function)
Bergamot is my go-to when emotional tension is trapped in the body—especially when someone feels stuck, frustrated, or disconnected from joy. It gently lifts the spirit without overstimulating and offers beautiful emotional harmonization. In my experience, it’s particularly helpful when Liver Qi stagnation begins to affect digestion, mood swings, or even cycles of self-judgment.
Key Constituents:
Limonene – Promotes emotional uplift, antibacterial and immune support
Linalyl acetate – Calming, sedative, helps regulate the nervous system
Linalool – Soothing, anxiolytic, helpful for emotional volatility
Note: Bergamot should be used cautiously on the skin due to its photosensitizing properties unless you're using a bergapten-free (FCF) version.
Aroma Energy: Pungent, cool, and awakening
Meridian Focus: Gallbladder, Liver
TCM Actions: Moves Liver and Gallbladder Qi, clears heat, reduces stagnation, alleviates headaches, calms rebellious Qi
Peppermint is an energetic mover. When someone is experiencing tension headaches, tight shoulders, or mental overwhelm—all signs of Liver-Gallbladder imbalance—I turn to Peppermint for its clarity and invigoration. It stimulates movement of stuck energy while simultaneously cooling inflammatory patterns (whether physical or emotional).
Key Constituents:
Menthol – Strong analgesic, cooling, decongesting
Menthone – Supports circulation and helps dispel stagnant energy
1,8-Cineole – Anti-inflammatory, opens the lungs and supports clarity
Peppermint’s energetic signature is assertive, so I tend to use it sparingly and with intention—especially when someone is energetically “overheated” or mentally scattered.
Aroma Energy: Sweet, warm, slightly earthy with a touch of herbaceous floral
Meridian Focus: Liver, Heart, Pericardium
TCM Actions: Spreads Liver Qi, stabilizes the Shen, supports emotional stability, security, and transformation after trauma or shock
Helichrysum is deeply comforting and profoundly healing. It’s a botanical balm for the heart and spirit, especially for those navigating emotional pain, unresolved grief, or the aftershocks of trauma. It doesn’t just soothe—it transforms. I often describe Helichrysum as the oil that helps us "alchemize the past" so we can move forward with courage and wholeness.
Key Constituents:
Italidiones – Rare diketones known for tissue regeneration, anti-inflammatory and emotional resilience
Neryl acetate – Calming, anti-spasmodic, and promotes a sense of safety
Alpha-pinene – Gently uplifting, supports mental clarity and resilience
Helichrysum has a strong connection to the Liver in its role of transforming emotional and energetic stagnation into flow and forgiveness. It is one of my most cherished oils when working with trauma through Aroma Acupoint Therapy or during deeply restorative yoga sessions.
Each of these oils supports the Wood element in their own unique way—whether it's through emotional release, energetic flow, or trauma integration. I’ve found them to be especially effective during spring (Wood's season) or during times of personal transformation when the soul is reaching for new growth but the body or emotions feel a step behind.
Each of these oils supports the spirit of the Wood element—offering clarity, emotional mobility, and the energetic nourishment we need to rise, renew, and realign. Whether you're navigating a personal transition, experiencing emotional stagnation, or simply embracing spring’s awakening energy, these aromatic allies can gently support your path forward.
